Hockey Canada offers multiple player pathways, allowing minor hockey players to choose between recreational and competitive hockey. Within the hockey structure, players participate through their local association (like ours!) and select the pathway that best suits their goals.

Though many players begin their hockey journey in the U7 or U9 program, the Delta Stars welcome new players at any age. While there are currently insufficient numbers for Delta Stars rep teams, U11+ players keen to play at a more competitive level will be welcome to try out for a rep team with a neighbouring association offering rep opportunities. Please contact the DFIHA Director of Hockey to discuss options and opportunities for players looking for a more advanced and competitive level of play.
DFIHA follows the framework and rules of Hockey Canada, BC Hockey and Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association (PCAHA).
The house / recreational program is designed for players who want to develop their skills and enjoy the game in a fun, team-focused environment. It is the largest program at most minor hockey associations and provides a strong foundation for players at all levels.
At the U7 and U9 levels, the focus is on skill development, fun, and building a love for the game. Players participate in a structured program that follows Hockey Canada’s Long-Term Player Development Model, ensuring they learn fundamental hockey skills in an age-appropriate environment.
DFIHA’s U7 and U9 programs emphasize small-area games, station-based drills, and progressive skill development. These early years provide the foundation for players as they prepare to transition into the tiered U11 program and rep / competitive levels in U13 and beyond.
Starting at U11, BC Hockey uses a tiered structure to group players based on skill and development level. Tiering helps ensure balanced competition and an environment where players can continue to grow at the right pace for them.
Where registration numbers allow, DFIHA will place U11+ players on teams according to their abilities, allowing for enhanced skills development and preparing for rep / competitive pathways in U13 and beyond.
Players looking for a more competitive experience may want to try out for a rep ‘A’ team with a neighbouring association offering those opportunities. Players in the rep ‘A’ program can also access regional development opportunities starting at the U13 level, including:
Since DFIHA does not currently offer a rep 'A' program, Delta girls interested in playing competitive hockey should contact other associations in the region for more information on eligibility and try outs. DFIHA's Director of Hockey can help you navigate this process.
It’s important to note that players can switch pathways at the start of each season. For example, a player in the U13 house program one year can choose to try out for a rep ‘A’ team the next season, and vice versa.
