Girls Ice Hockey in Delta

At DFIHA we are passionate about supporting girls in the game. We are dedicated to creating and maintaining an environment that fosters skill development, teamwork and respect among players, parents and volunteers.

  • Programs start at age 5 - players must turn 5 by December 31 in the year of registration.
  • Suitable for beginners and all recreational / house skill levels.
  • Season runs from September to March.
  • No body checking – we are committed to a safe and supportive environment for all players.
  • Quality coaching - specific focus on girls' skill development and team play, with extra professional skills coaching included in regular registration fees.
  • Special events - opportunities to celebrate girls and women in sport, attend girls' tournaments and participate in other special events with DFIHA.
  • Focus on growing confidence, hockey and leadership skills, teamwork and lifelong friendships.

Our Programs by Age Group

Our U7 and U9 programs focuses on fun, basic skill development, and introducing young players to the game of hockey. Using Hockey Canada's half/cross-ice approach, players develop confidence, fundamental skills and teamwork in a supportive environment. No skating or hockey experience is required.

  • Skating, turning, stopping
  • Puck handling, shooting, passing
  • Introduction to hockey rules and strategy
  • Core skills, teamwork, and fun

Season Info:

  • September to early March
  • 1–3 ice times per week, including practices, scrimmages / games and skills sessions
  • Scrimmages / games start later in the season (typically 8-10)

Ages:

  • U7 includes girls aged 5 and 6 (born 2020 or 2021)
  • U9 includes girls aged 7 and 8 (born 2018 or 2019)

DFIHA's U11 program builds on foundational skills and begins to introduce more advanced play, including full-ice games and scorekeeping. Emphasizing skill refinement and tactical understanding, this program prepares players for more competitive hockey. Tiering begins at this level.

Skills Focus:

  • Advanced skating (speed, endurance, edge control)
  • More refined puck handling and shooting
  • Hockey rules and strategy
  • Respectful play and teamwork

Season Info:

*In some associations, rep 'A' / competitive hockey teams start at the U11 level. DFIHA does not currently have adequate numbers to support rep 'A' teams; we hope to offer this opportunity in the future. Players seeking more competitive / rep play may choose to try out for a rep team in another association at the start of the season.*

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have questions? Please contact info@deltastars.ca for more information.

Proper equipment is essential for player safety and performance. DFIHA requires all players to wear the mandatory equipment listed below at all times during practices and games.

  • Hockey skates (figure skates not permitted)
  • CSA-approved helmet with full face shield / mask (ski and bike helmets are not permitted)
  • BNQ certified neck guard
  • Hockey pants, gloves, shin pads, elbow pads, chest / shoulder pads and pelvic protector
  • Hockey stick
  • Jersey and socks (provided by DFIHA for games)

*  Important: good quality, used equipment can be sourced from friends and family or from various sporting goods and consignment shops in the Lower Mainland. Please remember that good skates make a big difference in any player's skating ability.

The time commitment varies by age / division.

  • U7-U9 players will typically have 1-3 sessions per week, including practices, skills sessions and scrimmages / games.
  • U11-U18 players can expect to be on the ice for 2-4 sessions per week, including practices, skills sessions and games.
  • U21 players will typically have 1-2 ice times per week for practices and games.
  • DFIHA encourages teams to participate in local tournaments, but this is a team decision.
  • Individual players may also elect to participate in optional, fee-based professional development sessions offered from time to time.

* Note that schedules will vary between teams and depend on ice allocations from City of Delta. Your team's coach or manager will provide specific details at the start of the season.

Teams in PCAHA female hockey compete against other female teams in their age division from other associations, including:

  • Burnaby Wildcats
  • Surrey Falcons
  • Richmond Ravens
  • North Shore Winter Club
  • Tri-Cities Predators

Away games will require travel to other municipalities. A full listing of female ice hockey associations in the Lower Mainland is available at  Female League - PCAHA.

We VERY much have heard that players want power skating, goalie developing and other skills training.

DFIHA is planning to include special / specific skills sessions throughout the season as part of standard registration fees. Additional, optional, fee-based skills accelerator programs may be offered by from time to time. Please see the Skills Development page for more details.

DFIHA has applied to be the female association for all of the City of Delta, but approval of our application by PCAHA and BC Hockey is pending. Ice allocation is determined by City of Delta each year, but if we are approved for all of Delta we expect that the Delta Stars will have sessions in both North and South Delta rinks during the season.

It takes a community to launch and sustain a non-profit hockey association and DFIHA is no exception! As a 100% volunteer organization, we rely on our amazing group of parents, volunteers and community partners to run affordable, quality hockey programs for Delta girls. Whether you have a little time or a lot, please sign up to volunteer and keep female ice hockey alive and thriving in Delta.

DFIHA is not at this time charging a volunteer fee or deposit.

Not yet... The DFIHA launched as an independent all girls association in 2026, with only house / recreational level teams. Our vision is to develop more ice hockey opportunities for girls in Delta, including those playing at an advanced level. Stay tuned!
